Blog 4: iLife

Apple, in their ad entitled, “iLife (2006),” claims that owning a Mac computer increases the consumer’s options in terms of programs, and that using these programs creates a more enjoyable and organized computer experience. Apple supports this by using conversation to point out that opposed to using an iPod with just a PC, Macs deliver a number of other applications, including iMovie, iPhoto, and iWeb, and also uses logical arguments to contrast a Mac with a PC, including the fact that the PC’s only thrilling feature is a calculator. Apple’s purpose is to excite consumers about the options a Mac offers, in order to persuade them to buy a Mac. Apple speaks to all consumers across the spectrum, including both prospective Mac owners and current PC owners, to get all sides to switch to a Mac.

  1. Your precis was solid, but I have a few suggestions. Throughout the precis, you forgot to mention that Apple is mocking PC’s! In the first sentence, I would mention somewhere that Apple is mocking PCs’ lack of features. The second sentence is a bit long, and I think it could be made shorter, by just saying that “while Macs deliver a number of other applications, including iMovie, iPhoto, and iWeb, PCs’ only thrilling features are basic tools like a calculator.” I did like how you noted in that sentence, though, that Apple was using a conversation to support their point. For the third sentence, I would suggest adding that Apple is degrading PC’s to promote their own image. Your fourth sentence was good in terms of the audience, but you forget to mention the tone of the commercial, which could be described as “comical, satirical, or mocking.” Otherwise, nice job.

  2. Very good use of the word "claim" in the first sentence, as this is a commercial so the words can to necessarily be trusted, so it is just a claim, not a statement. As Tani said, you did not mention the attack aspect of the commercial which is very evident in the video. In line 3, you said that the purpose was too "excite consumers about the options a mac offers", but the ad seemed to just put down the features that PC offers, not promoting mac, but belittling apple. Overall though, it was a very well-written precise.
